History of Soutache Cord

The word ‘soutache’ itself probably originates from the Hungarian sujtás, used to describe the artistic decorations on the sleeves and trousers of Hungarian  folk costumes and military uniforms of the Hussars. It wasn’t until the 16th century that the Czech guild in Krnov produced the first true soutache passementerie. The Habsburgs then popularised soutache starting in the mid‑1500s. They used it as a luxurious form of passementerie, which soon became a staple of aristocratic decoration across their empire and beyond. Illustrations like those in the Códice de trajes (mid-1500s) depict Habsburg-influenced nobility wearing outfits trimmed with corded braid, adding subtle but structured visual accents.

Not Sure What to Choose – Linen Tape or Soutache Cord?

If you’re torn between linen tape and natural linen soutache cord, the right choice depends on your project’s purpose. Linen soutache cord shines in decorative roles, adding elegant detail to clothing, accessories, or as embellishments on military uniforms.  On the other hand, linen tape is perfect for structural tasks—think seam reinforcement, garment ties, and drawstrings or historical garment construction—thanks to its strength and natural look. Whether you need function or flourish, each trim brings its own unique value to your craft.
